Disney Villains

Hey there ya'll,

This week were are going to get to know a some of the best Disney villains. Some of the best are Malifecent (Sleeping Beauty), Cruella DeVille (101 Dalmations), Jafar (Aladdin), and Ursella (Little Mermaid).

We only see these people as being bad. We never think about why they act and react the way they do. Maybe they had sad childhoods or were abused! Disney is the first time we experience in our lives that it's okay to not get both sides of a story and to judge without guilt.

We don't know why Cruella DeVille despised animals so much...or that she despised them at all! Maybe, just maybe, she had such a strong affection for them that she wanted them around her all the time which is why she wears fur all of the time. If she did despise animals, maybe it was for a just reason! Perhaps she was attacked by an animal as a child which caused her to have a fear of alive animals!

Malifecent is a villain who never gets much street cred. She had a good plan that was very well thought out. However, she did make a bad choice when she decided that Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) should die. This may be way out there but maybe Malifecent and Aurora's dad had a little something something going on! If you really think about it, and I mean think about it hard, Malifecent kind of helped Aurora out. If she hadn't have put that spell on her then the fairy godmothers wouldn't have had to hide her in the forest and the Prince would have never found her! Also, he had to kiss her to break the spell which helped her know that he was her soul mate!

Last but not least, I'd like to draw your attention to Hades from Hercules. If you were in his shoes i think you'd be a little cranky too! If you had to deal with dead people and the after life and chill in a super hot place every day for your entire life I bet you wouldn't be chipper.

I'm not justifying the villains actions here, i'm just asking you guys to take a different approach to looking at them. Just because they're different and maybe a little scary doesn't mean that they're all bad. Sometimes in life all you need is a friend. :)

Well, for now, Goodbye and have a great week,
Courtney

  1. Good points. I think the villains don't really have histories because children see things in black and white. Giving them a sympathetic villain might confuse them and allow them to excuse the bad guys' behavior.
I can totally relate with the villains now, though. Hades...I mean, everyone is up there having a party in the clouds, having a great time, and they make him deal with dead souls all the time. No wonder he's depressed and sarcastic. (Taking it out on Baby Hercules, though...not cool).
You had some good points about Cruella DeVille. I'm sure there are lots of people who have a fear of animals, spurned by a traumatic experience in their childhood.

  2. I see what you are saying in a way but a villian is a villian in my opinion. A rough childhood could cause some villionous actions but all of that is in the past and everyone always says that we should learn from our past. If someone had a rough childhood, you would think that learning from their past would tell them to be nice to everyone, not a villian. You do make good points though.

  3. This was such an interesting post! You definatly got me to look at disney villians in a different perspective, I never even thought about that before. It has been quite sometime since I have actually watched a disney movie and when I was younger a villian was villian. The Cruella DeVille part really caught my attention because I am not a big fan of animals because of past experience and maybe she was the same way. Good blog though!

  4. Good job Courtney! The Cartoon baddies may just be misunderstood after all, plus without them the stories wouldn't be too interesting. Of the above listed villains, I would say Hades was my favorite. He was just sick of having to live in a whole in the ground that’s all...and hey the people that he rolled with weren't too "lively". His little henchmen cracked me up at the same time. Disney stories need their villains as well and your blog helped bring a different perspective on the villainous villains.

  5. Agreed, villains are required in any movie, especially in the cartoons we watched growing up to learn about good and bad. Taking a different look at them though, Yes, i would have to agree, in the disney movies, the villains are just the people that arent getting what they want handed to them. Hades - God Status up in the clouds, Cruella - a Fur coat, If someone would have just bought her a bearskin coat, there would have been no Problem! Good post!

  6. Cruella DeVille was a bad person in 101 Dalmations but when I saw, the movie I knew there had to be some good in here. She could not be all-bad but I always did wonder if that good could come out of her. Disney movies have always been so fun and cute to me when I was a kid to now even. However, I like how you think about Villains and how they can become good in a way. I really like your topic.

  7. I think for a movie to have a good plot, there has to be a good and bad guy. If they did show a point of change in their character, people would be disappointed when the good guy wins. When the bad guy loses, there is some satisfaction in the good guy. Evil is punished in these movies. If it weren't, what would it tell the audience?
